Katrina Brown
Katrina Brown pays a return visit to L'animal a l'esquena with the video project Beneath the Surface.
In this residency the English artist aims to create a series of large-scale drawings based on her work with movement, using drawing to investigate the surfaces of her choreographic practice; wall, floor, paper, skin. Her research involves approaching drawing as an action-image, between performing-drawing and becoming-a-drawing. She will work with moving-drawing scores from which emerge visual graphic images – material, spatial and temporal architectures.
Katrina will work with a large glass table made in 2007 for a research project on gravity and the spine by the dancer and choreographer Steve Paxton, in collaboration with Contradanse, a documentation and training centre in Brussels. Brown will use this as transparent surface through which to document the moving-drawing action from other perspectives. She usually works with charcoal on paper or chalk on walls, so this is an opportunity to perceive and capture a meeting of body and surface from beneath the surface.
During her stay at L'animal she also wants to spend time documenting, writing about and sharing these works with artists in the area as part of her PhD research project.
On Saturday 5th July there will be a movement and drawing workshop with a group of students from the EMDC (Escuela Municipal de Danza de Celrà/Celrà Municipal Dance School), from 16.00 to 18.30. On Tuesday 8th July these students will present the experience they have shared with her, as well as the experience they will have had with the choreographer Toni Jodar.
