Zonzo is a process of archival creation that involves open-minded research into the implicit life of a territory to see how it transforms and singularises the land, the villages and their inhabitants. Zonzo attempts to draw a non-figurative map using stories and documents that paint an active portrait of the inhabitants and makes them the protagonists of their own life-stories. Through their experiences and opinions, Zonzo glimpses details and particularities of lives that are, of necessity, anchored to a specific place and time but whose essence is shown to be universal. Every inhabitant, starring in his or her own story, traces paths and ways of life through his/her experiences and everyday activities, conserving memories that keep their environment alive.
The project, which began with the creation of an archive about part of the province of Álava, now comes to Catalonia to explore other territories in search of parallels and contrasts. The choice of places to encounter and archive is not purely random; they are always impregnated by the presence of their inhabitants, who give them their singular character, and by the activities carried out there. They are meeting places, places to pass through, private, public, lost, hidden, places that speak for themselves and give shape to their own maps.
The Zonzo project is part of Tapete Común (Comunal Carpet), an initiative by the arts centre Azala in Lasierra, a small town in southern Álava, whose aims include facilitating and supporting artistic residencies for creation and research in collaboration with other, similar organisations so that the arts can develop at a local level in small towns, away from the direct influence of big cities. Another fundamental objective of Tapete Común is to share this experience and seek out new ways to continue working and visualising possible shared futures, always stressing shared responsibility, care for the environment, interdependence and dialogue that allow projects to be viable and sustainable.
In 2016 Azala and L’animal a l’esquena will together welcome the following projects: Zonzo by Laia Cabrera and Alex Ardid, Ji Gou: Preludio y fuga en La Menor (Ji Gou: Prelude and Fugue in La Minor) by Neus Villà and Envoltura by Idoia Zabaleta.
