ico Burnt [the eternal long now] is a performance piece created by LEEVAKULYA.
Burnt takes a close look at the dynamic relationship between union and exhaustion through burnt-out syndrome. According to the Dutch sociologist Fred L. Polak in his book The Image of the Future (1961), “Every man leads a double life.” For Polak, this dualism was the indispensible requirement for the movement of the events in time and the dynamics of historical change.

Today, however, “a double life” seems a euphemism. With the rapid development of digital technology in recent decades, how many lives do we now lead simultaneously? How can we even count the myriad versions of ourselves that we generate through platforms, spaces, profiles and interfaces?
For us, these “lives” have multiplied over time. The self on Facebook is different from the self on Linkedin, just as the professional self in the office diary contrasts with the self pictured on Instagram or the self measured on a FitBit. Within this intense fracturing, and the work it involves, the idea of a “double life” appears romantically simple.
It’s no surprise that under the influence of these tugs, tensions and confrontations we become incapable, and incapacitated, to face forwards, let alone to act.
The imagination requires energy and mental capacity (space and time) to dream. The mass phenomenon of burn-out is a direct reflection of the problems of our cultural imagination.
Society is built around the capacity of the individual to break herself into pieces, to be present and “full on” at all times and in multiple situations and platforms in order to achieve success.
Burnt [the eternal long now] will take on a state of the body and a choreography that describes constant change, a pushing and pulling like a floating boat that is never anchored, never at peace, always in movement and at the command of growing waves.
Participants: Chen-Wei Lee, Esse Vanderbrugge, CharloUe Petersen, Vakulya Zoltan, Abris Gryllus.
