Pep Aymerich is a carpenter as well as a performer and plastic artist and has been at L’animal before for very different reasons. He lives in Celrà and now offers us a residency closely related to his job as a carpenter.
The residency will consist in building a chair from wood, starting with it in its most natural state: a poplar log. Only traditional tools will be used in the construction of this chair, which will also be traditional, with a structure that combines efficiency and simplicity.

The idea has more to do with the process than the finished product: taking a great deal of care with movements, whether posture, the use of force, skill or efficacy. As though the process of making the chair from the log were a piece of choreography.
The chair is one of the objects with the deepest and broadest range of meanings. It has been there since the earliest days of humanity, evolving from leaning the weight of the body on the floor to rest the legs and making use of the natural outline of an edge, a rock or a tree. Its success over all this time is due to the fact that it fulfills the need for rest while awake and conscious – eating, reading, talking etc. This is why such an everyday object is such a strong symbol, for example as an emblem of power: he who sits on the throne is king. Until quite recently the chair was used almost exclusively for rest but nowadays many people work sitting down.
Above and beyond any such symbolic meanings, the chair has a very light imprint. It responds to the biological features of the human body, making it intuitively easy to use.
