Andrée Martin

ico This residence is based on a large research and creation project entitled Abécédaire du corps dansant (an alphabet primer on the dancing body). Abécédaire du corps dansant is a work of both reflection and creation on the dancing body and based on the 26 letters of the alphabet. The Abécédaire associates each of the 26 letters with a concept designed to provoke, in texts and movement, thought about the many ways of considering the dancing body. Each term selected (A - action; B – blessure [injury]; C – chute [fall]; D – dressage [training]; E - expression; F – faille [personal weakness], etc.) triggers the creation of a 30-minute performance that explores the dancer's body at different levels (personal, social, political, aesthetic, historical and artistic). Since it is both a theoretical reflection on dance and a performance, Abécédaire du corps dansant places equal emphasis on theorizing about the dancing body and its many underlying concepts – the technical, expressive body, the body as subject/work of art, the technology of the self (Foucault), habitus de corps (Bourdieu), somaesthetics (Shusterman), etc. – and how the body is choreographed and directed.

Since each letter/term is associated with an independent section of Abécédaire, each generates a theoretical reflection (in the form of an essay) that is read on stage and sheds light on the practices, habits and habitus, techniques, points of view and concepts surrounding the dancing body. Each essay then leads to the creation of a performance that places the body in direct interaction with dance and words.

At L'animal a l'esquena, they will work onn the sixth letter/term of our alphabet primer: S is for Senses/sensations. For this creation residency Andrée Martin will be accompanied by four performers: Judith Lessard-Bérubé, Catherine Gaudet, Caroline Gravel and Caterina Fariña, who will also be acting as co-creators.
