Martin Bélanger
( Martin Bélanger, Nadia Lauro, Jean-Sébastien Durocher )

ico A-maze, i.e. a labyrinth, and "amaze," i.e. a verb. And if knowledge of the world originates in the labyrinth, the same can be said of knowing oneself. Here, the labyrinth lies within the body itself, with the self occupying the undiscovered centre. This delving into the body through gesture reveals an abysmal or vertiginous inner geography at once grandiose or intimate, dark or luminous, marked by an ever-changing, tumultuous and contemplative velocity. This inner epic research will look into transmigrations of bodies, states and beings and will forcibly be brought about by the confinement of the body within a limited space: a circle measuring roughly three metres in diameter.

Bélanger will work with collaborators Nadia Lauro (scenography) and Jean-Sébastien Durocher (sound).

With an aesthetic turn of mind and attitude that places him among the fiercely independent proponents of the living arts, Martin Bélanger makes the combination and inclusion of forms, ideas and arts his creative credo. The body, source of all expressiveness, is at the centre of his concerns, and language and speech are subordinated to it.

Bélanger's creative process can be distinguished by the way it first creates a format, a conceptual construct with the potential to situate the work within a network of socio-political, historic, artistic, popular, philosophical or literary references. In keeping with the concepts, the content gives the references strength and meaning, yet it still enjoys a measure of freedom. This conceptual canvas can relate to stagecraft just as it can be drawn from a well-known popular movement or a specific artistic performance. It can also make use of sampling, collage and quotation.
