Pep Ramis
( Pep Ramis, María Muñoz, Mal Pelo )

ico The Mountain, the Truth and Paradise is a performance project investigating divinity and vulgarity, spirituality and ignorance, beauty and banality. It is a piece about the contradictions of the human condition. After centuries of history we still carry on proving our double capacity for simultaneous destruction and creation, as inseparable parts of our identity. We sublimate and assassinate.

Should we accept this bi-polarity?

The body reflects our history, our patterns of behaviour. We carry the values of our surroundings written in us. This research focusses on discovering and questioning some of these patterns.

Pep Ramis aims to continue the line of enquiry of previous Mal Pelo pieces such as The Fifth Winter or All the Names. He wants to work more closely on the sound track and its place on stage by manipulating the sounds of objects and of the performer’s own voice. Sound and pared back movement will be fundamental elements in the construction of the piece, paying particular attention to precise details of gesture.

With his eclectic past and training, Pep Ramis would like to condense his experience of music, the manipulation of objects, set-design, dancing and acting to create a mult-faceted piece of writing. For the first time since Dol in 1993, he returns to solo work along with a team of collaborators including María Muñoz, Leo Castro, Camille Decourtye, Blai Mateu, August Viladomat and Fanny Thollot.

I value every form of life, a snowflake, a strawberry, a fly.
I value the mineral kingdom, all the stars.
I value wine with pasta, an unbidden smile, the weariness
two old people who fancy each other do not try to hide.
I value things that will be worth nothing tomorrow
and things hardly worth anything today.
I value all wounds.
I value saving water, mending shoes,
knowing when to keep quiet, answering cries for help, asking permission to sit down,
feeling grateful without quite remembering why.
I value being able to tell which way is north in a room
and the name of the wind that dries the washing.
I value the journey of the vagabond, the seclusion of the monk,
the patience of the condemned, whatever his crime.
I value using the verb to love and the hypothesis that there is a creator.
Many of these values I have never known.
