After 24 years sharing their professional and personal lives, Mónica and Colate are setting out on their last dance tour. At an altitude of 4000 metres, the desert of the Andes will test the limits of their relationship and of their bodies.
DUO is a van journey through the arid borderlands between Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. It is also a piece of contemporary dance set in schools and squares in remote villages. And an inner journey for two individuals trying to keep their balance as they come up against their physical and emotional limits.
“Writing from and with reality. Places and people redefine and re-write what happens in fiction. After two documentary journeys, one in winter with the photographic and production team, one on my own in spring, the project hit a crisis. Why here, in a place which, though it drives my writing for personal reasons, seems so distant to me? How to get closer, from what angle, how to portray a world and communities that are as fascinating as they are complex, without turning it into something merely folkloric, picturesque, formulaic or stylised? Two really strong experiences occurred at this point, when I was on my own. I saw a sand storm for the first time, lived it, felt it and after this absolutely earthshaking experience I was left with a sense of a vision. It was here that I found one of the binding forces of the story: inner vision. A profound correspondence between inner and outer worlds. It is something that has always fascinated me in the films of Roberto Rossellini, Jean Epstein or Andrei Tarkovsky”.
“DUO is a film that searches, and searches for itself, in land, roots, memory, a disappearing way of life, the countryside, the home, and feelings.”
