Sol Picó
Sol Picó is a contemporary dance company set up in 1994 by the dancer and choreographer Sol Picó (Alcoy, Alicante), who gave it her name. From the start, their work has involved the mingling and interaction of different genres. Their mature technique combines strength, precision and dynamism, supporting the organic approach of their work. Enlivened by humour, their pieces have an uncompromising style of their own, following no instruction manual. What at first seemed a challenge has become a way of working. What seemed a risky and unsustainable project has become the raw material for their work.

Sol Picó builds bridges between opposing worlds, bringing together apparently irreconcilable elements: flamenco danced en pointe, warlike costumes masking female archetypes or the mass of their sets alongside the organic nature of their work. The music for their shows is another of the tools they use to re-enforce the mix of styles: either daring live arrangements or tracks that engrave themselves in our memories.

The transformation of everyday space into an extraordinary landscape, both in their street shows and on stage, is never what we might expect and always goes beyond our understanding. The constant element of festivity, sparking in different ways according to the production, always gives us a feeling of spontaneity, thanks to the mastery of their impeccable technique.

In all their creations, Sol Picó use elements of popular culture. Building an iconography of their own in which cultural references form part of our personal stories. Their project offers a clear example of the relationship between myth and memory, both individual and collective.

And Sol Picó give us the opportunity to experience this. To live it from within through emotion. It is more an experience than a narrative. More an experience than a representation. A catharsis.
