The title V is neither the letter nor the Roman numeral but the image of a flying seagull.
This project is for the creation of a show of dance, physical theatre, art and live music, about 50 minutes long, with a dance performer, Patricia Hastewell Puig, and a cellist, Oscar Alabau Fernández, on stage.
V unfolds in a dream space. It deals with fears and desires, the human need to leave a mark for fear of disappearing, the ephemeral nature of life and the perpetuity of art. It has an existentialist strand, as-king questions about the human condition and the meaning of life. It is inspired by Beckett’s theatre of the absurd in “Waiting for Godot” and the expressionism of Russian painter Marc Chagall. It counter-points the ephemeral nature of dance with venerable pieces of music by Johann Sebastian Bach and György Ligeti. It also juxtaposes different disciplines, such as dance, music and art, and works created in different centuries, revealing how contemporary they are in their art, how authentic their humanity, how the same themes keep being repeated as the centuries go by.
V gives a voice to the body, to fantasy, and presents itself as a kind of performance manifesto. It starts with the tangible, the body, matter, to reach into the world of the imagination. This piece is the internal monologue of a body that speaks and explains what it has experienced, or imagined. A solitary body playing with the imagination and changing its point of view in search of answers.
What are we doing here? The figure symbolises the passing of time, the search for a belief that could make sense of life or of its existance, and these themes are handled with humour and a sense of the absurd.
V will be premiered on 26th October 2023 at the Dansat Festival at the SAT theatre in Barcelona.
